I can’t really say that I put much effort into Mother’s Day. However, you shouldn’t forget it either. Once we are adults it’s easy to get busy with life and we forget to make time for our parents. I know I don’t spend as much time with mine as they deserve.
Mother’s Day has become one of those days marketed towards gift giving. I think it’s great to give gifts, and that may be what your mother wants or expects. However, I believe that sharing time and making memories with our loved ones is the most important thing we can give them.
So don’t let the ads convince you that simply buying a gift is good enough. Surprise your mother by making her the center of your attention for the day. Spend the day hanging out at the house with her. I know I will sure miss the sound of my children in the house when they’re grown. Listen to those old childhood stories, because those are the moments that mattered most to her. Pull out the photos and reminisce about the things your family did together.
If you can’t make it to spend the day with your mom, go ahead and have a long chat with her on the phone. Send her that gift with an endearing note about how much she means to you, or your favorite childhood memory.
As I watch my mother get older, I know that one day I will miss her more than anything. I just want her to know how much she is loved and valued before it is too late. As I watch my own children get older, I know that one day I will not be the center of their world. That I will have an empty house, and as much as I want to, I can’t hold onto every moment in my memory. So I remind all of my readers, don’t forget Mother’s Day.
