Laundry Day

Today is laundry day. I’ve been up since 6:30 am and have been faithfully at it. With 6 people in my house we go through a lot of laundry. I usually try to do laundry daily, but this past week I was lazy. I’ve been having a lot of migraines and I’ve been really tired. I have been napping a lot this week while the kids are at school.

Anyway, I wanted to have some laundry talk with you guys. As a kid my mom taught me how to do the laundry. My older two are doing their own laundry now but I feel like I haven’t given them the whole lesson. Maybe that’s something I will show them this summer.

As a kid my mom taught me to treat stains, sort laundry, select load size and temperature setting. I also learned to fold, hang and iron clothes. I don’t let my boys do all of that. I keep the washing machine and dryer set and they throw in their clothes and fold when done. My little two only help fold and put up their clothes.

Now I’m going to be honest, some days I sort the laundry and I think I get really overboard with it. Here is how I sort clothes:

  • Whites
  • Jeans
  • Towels
  • Darks
  • Colors
  • Delicates
  • Heavy soiled
  • Hand Wash Only

Other days I just toss it all in and hope it comes out okay. Now, I have ruined some clothes that way so, it’s probably best not to do things that way.

When it comes to laundry detergent I prefer the liquid Gain detergent. I love all of their scents but usually buy the original. I have tried basically every kind of detergent, but I like the smell of Gain and I feel like it does a good job of cleaning my clothes. I know the cap measures the detergent for load size, but I always fill it up. I’m sure I’m wasting soap, but I just can’t help myself. Sometimes I will rinse my load a second time because I added too much soap. So, I should make more effort to add the right amount of soap. In reality I don’t do it that often because with a large family, basically every load is a large one.

I do not use fabric softener and rarely use dryer sheets. I used to, but stopped using it because my son was having an allergic reaction to certain scents. Particularly the lavender scented fabric softener. Anyway, I like to use the scent boosters and usually buy the Gain brand to keep the same scent. This past week my husband bought the Downy scent booster and I had an allergic reaction. I felt like I had the chicken pox! My entire body was itching and I had to rewash all my clothes. 😩 It was awful. I lathered an anti-itch cream on my body like it was lotion just to get some sleep.

One thing I added to my laundry routine a couple months ago was putting a cup of white vinegar into each load. I was looking for a way to keep my towels absorbent and fresh smelling. In my Google searching I found many people suggested vinegar and so I tried it. At first I was only adding it to my towels but now I add it to every load. It really helps with removing stains and keeping my laundry and washing machine smelling clean.

I don’t depend on vinegar alone to remove stains, I usually use Shout to treat stains on clothes. However, this week I did have a small load of heavy soiled clothes that I washed in hot water with vinegar, without treating with Shout, and ALL of the stains came out. I was very impressed.

So my fellow moms, now that you know how I do my laundry, tell me do you separate or toss it all? What products have you found to make your laundry duty better or easier? My older two are 10 & 12: should I teach them to iron and how to choose settings on the washing machine?
